Recycled Joke Of The Week
Then he noticed a police officer walking between the lines of stopped cars so he rolled down his window and asked, "Officer, what's the holdup?"
The officer replied, "The President is depressed, so he stopped his motorcade and is threatening to douse himself with gasoline and set himself on fire. He says no one believes his stories about why we went to war in Iraq, or that his tax cuts will help anyone except his wealthy friends. So we're taking up a collection for him."
The lobbyist asked, "How much have you got so far?"
The officer replied, "About forty gallons, but a lot of folks are still siphoning."
What The Writers Strike Really Means
First off, movies. Knoxville has never been a hot bed of movie making but the combination of our new State Film Incentive package and a rush to get as many scripts written and in production before the strike could provide a little spark--for a few months. This boost in production would grind to a halt if the Actors join the strike next summer. From what I hear of the negotiations, this strike is likely to go on for a long time. From where I sit, I would not plan on making too many movies after June of 2008 in Knoxville. Of course, we'll just go out and make our own independent projects without WGA writers, so the indie film scene should emerge virtually unscathed.
Ah, but what about television you ask? Well, look around you--see many WGA writers in town? The Guild may have a death grip on Hollywood, but their virtually non-existant in Knoxville. Production companies like Rivr and Jupiter have been getting along pretty well without the Guild for a long time. Take a look at HGTV and JTV and the situation is pretty similar, not much Guild presence. Will the networks start buying more reality based shows that don't depend on the writers? I sure hope so. Maybe they'll pick up one of my TV shows--no Guild writers here. (Seriously, four properties for sale: mention this article for a discount.)
In the long run, the writer's strike could be good for the production community of Knoxville--which is good for all of Knoxville. Don't get me wrong, I'll miss the Daily Show and the Oscars wouldn't be the same without all the terrible writing, oh wait, maybe they would... Anyway, if Knoxville gets an extra movie and a few TV shows out of the deal--that works for me. Sorry John Stewart, gotta put the mortgage payment first. Now, let's get out there and sell some shows people!
For more information about the strike visit Entertainment Weekly. If you totally disagree with what I'm saying, shoot me an email and I'll post it here. I think the writers are right to strike, I'm just okay with benefitting a little from the process!
